I've been working away on lots of stuff lately. Lots of experimental crochet, embroidery projects that just keep getting more complicated and stuff like this. Please forgive my slightly blurry and crooked photo, I swear I'll get a better one soon!
I am really happy with how this one turned out. It was supposed to be a complex piece with crochet elements and lots of nylon weaving in and out of the frame. I got this far and decided it was done. The simplicity spoke more to the text than if I had crowded the frame.

I am so lucky to have been given the opportunity to be this years Studio Artist at Capitol Hill School in Calgary! I have already started to work on some stuff and have met some fantastic people, I am looking forward to the coming year!
I will hopefully be mindful enough to post photos of my work while at the school! Check back soon! I have been lucky enough to be able to participate in the knitting of some fantastic pieces. These are my beautiful (HA!) pieces, one hat and one mitten. I have one more hat on my kneeleds that is almost ready to hand it! Please check out Mackenzie Kelly-Frere blog to learn more about this great project to be displayed at the end of August in Inverness, Nova Scotia. This summer has been a busy one! I participated in the Contextural Summer Residency which took up a lot of my time. Some of the work that I finished is up in Gallery 371, located at The Alberta College of Art & Design. You all are invited to the reception which is on Thursday September 4th from 6-8 pm. Come and enjoy the work which spans three separate gallery spaces from many participants of the residency.
Check out the Contextural facebook page here for more information and photos of the exhibition! I don't have photos of the works in the show yet so enjoy this print I created this summer instead! Great News! I was interviewed a few weeks ago by a reporter from The Gauntlet, the U of C newspaper and they wrote one awesome article about my show at /Stride +15 and my work! Just click the link and it will send you straight there!
Hope you enjoy it, I know I did! http://www.thegauntlet.ca/story/putting-scars-display https://www.facebook.com/events/599335433424962/ My Solo Exhibition at the /Stride +15 gallery in Calgary is going up TOMORROW! Come on down to the Epcore Centre and check it out, it will be up until July 31st with reception on July 18th at 6pm. STRETCH is a three-dimensional installation that investigates the relationship of construction and deconstruction. The act of sewing nylon under tension pulls the material to its limits. Eventually, it can no longer withstand the strain and shreds itself, starting at the weakest point. This cycle is continuous; repairing a flaw creates another, until there is nothing left but the scars created by the thread. This constant reparation-disintegration process poses the question of when to stop trying to fix the imperfection and accept it for what it is. |
